Nils Robert Meyer
† Dec. 4, 2001
I am still somewhat uncomfortable to share this event in this forum.
But ultimately, I do not longer want to hide this most horrific event in
my and our lives: My brother Nils is dead. He died of a heart attack last
December, twelve days before his 29th birthday on St. Lucia in the Caribean.
There are no words that capture the void that his death has created in our
lives. It is so easy to think that only children in the third world die this
young; or drunk kids driving too fast on rural highways. Yet it is life
itself that manifests in death and that teaches us that we can only expect the unexpected. In hindsight, the
intensity and committment with which Nils lived his life may explain how
quickly he depleted his body; that his arteries were no longer able to
sustain his life. It is ironic that he died just when things were settling
down, having just moved to a house named "House of the Winds" on St. Lucia.
Nils had set out to discover this world - highly intelligent, constantly
challenging himself and others and pursuing his dreams with a vigor that is
umatched by most. He hated compromise. He was blessed with a broad range of
skills and with the ablity to teach himself almost anything he needed in order to shape
his life according to his ideas. He was a publisher, writer, environmentalist,
artist, editor, business man, sailor, graphic designer, entrepreneur - but
most of all you were a traveller. Your death sent all of us who knew you on
a special kind of journey - the journey inwards to discover deep inside
the meaning of it all...
You will always be in my heart, my brother.
Our mother collected some of Nils artistic work.
